Most people choose a sofa fabric by touch in a showroom, then are surprised a year later when it looks tired. Fabric is a material decision, not a texture decision — it has to match how the room is actually used.
Start with who sits on it
A guest sofa in a formal living room can wear linen or boucle — soft, textured, not built for daily abuse. A family sofa that sees kids, pets and monsoon humidity needs a tighter weave: cotton-poly blends or a performance fabric that resists moisture and pilling. Decide this before you fall for a colour.
Weight tells you more than colour
Heavier weaves (measured in GSM) resist sagging and pilling far better than light decorative fabrics. If a showroom can't tell you the GSM, ask — it is a better predictor of how a sofa looks in three years than anything else on the swatch card.
